A Crucial Club Meeting in a Suddenly Uncertain Time

There's a lot of uncertainty right now, but one thing that is for certain are the designs an emboldened GOP has on our public lands and our nation's long-standing environmental policies, from the EPA to the labels that go on our food.

With Democrats now cast into the proverbial wilderness at the national level, this cuts to the very heart of the mission of San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action.

While the national election results are certainly the nightmare scenario many of us have dreaded, with the White House and Congress in radicalized GOP hands – we will not despair, and we will not go quietly into the night. We are organized, and here in Southern California, we are strong.

We also have some legitimate, local electoral successes to acknoweldge and celebrate, so p
lease join us for our final San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action meeting of the year, next Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at the La Jolla Village Square community room – on the ground floor of the mall between the AMC La Jolla 12 cinemas and Sol Yoga Studios.

We'll first hear from our elected officials and newly-elected officials, and from incumbent San Diego Unified school board member Kevin Beiser. Following remarks from president Tommy Hough and the acknowledgement of our new members, a quick report from treasurer Brett Fisher, and a report from our V.P. for political action Fred Rogers – we'll move on with our featured panel discussion for the meeting.

Panel Presentations and Moderated Discussion

SDCDEA president Tommy Hough will discuss the threat to public lands and specific legislation and executive orders which will likely be on Trump's first 100 days' chopping block, including the Antiquities Act and the Roadless Rule.

Stefanie Sekich-Quinn, coastal preservation manager with the Surfrider Foundation, will go over threats to water policy from Congress and the White House. A guest to be named shortly will discuss the potentially calamitous effects to climate and clean air policy from a Trump administration.

Dr. Nilmini Silva-Send will discuss threats to climate and air quality policy, from restrictions on coal-fired power plants to the Paris climate agreement.

Club vice president for political action Fred Rogers will moderate the panel presentations and related question and answer session.

The news will not be pleasant, but we're going to arm you with the best marching orders we can. We also hope to have some positive political support to report by meeting time as well, but mostly – it's imperative for you to know specifically what's at stake, and what can be done.

If you're troubled by the loss of the White House, if you remain in shock, if you simply want to do something – then join us on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the La Jolla Village Square community room as we set an agenda for the next several months heading into 2017.

Join or Support Our Organization

Our meetings are always free and open to the public, but we'd love for you to join San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action now.

We're one of only TWO environmental affinity clubs in county Democratic parties anywhere in the state – and we are uniquely positioned to forge new pathways between political action, activism and conservation within a Democratic party structure. We need your support more than ever.

Consider joining at the $25, $40 or $10 level so we can continue putting on informative programs and responding to a very new and dangerous legislative, executive and judicial climate in Washington, D.C. that is in stark contrast to the environmental policies we believe in – and which have benefited the American people with clean water, clean air, and room to roam, recalibrate and recreate.

You can join on-line with your credit card, or download a membership form and mail it back with a check.
