Join San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action this Wed., July 19, at  Elijah's Restaurant at 7061 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. as we welcome David Lundin, the president and founder of the Balboa Park Heritage Association, as he gives a presentation on one of the great urban parks in North America – but one that is suffering from tens of millions of dollars in desperately-needed maintenance backlogs.

We want less cars and more bicycles and walking in Balboa Park, not only because it's good for the environment and the health of San Diegans, but also because it supports the aims of the city of San Diego's Climate Action Plan.

But if the "solution" harms the heritage and character of the park to the extent proposed by what has become known as the Jacobs Plan, which does little to address the overriding environmental concerns, that's something this club may have significant reservations about.

San Diego's Original Community Open Space, Since 1835

Picture
One of the world's great urban parks, Balboa Park is also one of the nation's longest-serving open space preserves, first set aside for public use in 1835. Today, Balboa Park attracts visitors from around the world to enjoy the architecture of the 1915 Panama–California Exposition and 1935 California Pacific International Exposition, along with the park's network of trails.

Unfortunately, as we've indicated, there are also millions of dollars in backlogged park maintenance, and while the Jacobs Plan will cover some needed maintenance, it also calls for a freeway-style off-ramp from the just-retrofitted Cabrillo Bridge, a large road through (which may destry) Palm Canyon, and a multi-story parking garage (!) behind the finely-tuned Spreckels Organ Pavilion.
