Join San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action for an informal meet-and-greet for club members and the San Diego environmental community with Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia of Coachella, who represents California's 56th Assembly District in Sacramento.

Meet Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia
Friday, Oct. 28
3 to 5 p.m.
Karl Strauss Tasting Room and Beer Garden
5985 Santa Fe St.
San Diego, CA 92109

The 56th Assembly District stretches from the southern border of Joshua Tree National Park in Riverside County, south through the Imperial Valley and Salton Sea to the border with Mexico in Imperial County.

The former mayor of Coachella, Garcia introduced AB 197 this summer as a companion piece of climate change legislation to State Senator Fran Pavley's proposal for a new state emissions target. Garcia's legislation requires the California Air Resources Board (ARB) to consider new factors when implementing regulations, including the prioritization of emissions cuts at oil refineries and other polluters that harm the health of residents.

Garcia also chairs the Select Committee on Renewable Energy Development and Restoration of the Salton Sea. The result of an engineering accident in 1905, the Salton Sea is still regarded as an important wildlife refuge along the Pacific Flyway and is the  site of a popular California State Park.

However, the sea will become more critical to the immediate health of the San Diego region and the Imperial Valley as it continues to dry and shrink with warmer weather, revealing more of the dry lakebed – now caked with decades of agricultural runoff and alkaline-encrusted soils. As the waters recede and the lakebed dries, this could potentially send toxin-filled soil and dust westward duting Santa Ana events.

Assemblymember Garcia will join SDCDEA members and friends this Friday, Oct. 28, from 3 to 5 pm at the Karl Strauss Brewing Company Tasting Room and Beer Garden, located in Rose Canyon just east of I-5 at 5985 Santa Fe Street.

Please note: Santa Fe Street runs between Morena Blvd. and I-5 in Rose Canyon, down the hill from Clairemont and Bay Ho. It is one way in, and one way out. The best way to access the brewery is via Garnet Ave. just east of Mission Bay Drive and the I-5 overpasses, and just west of Morena Blvd. You can only immediately access Santa Fe Street by making a right hand turn from westbound Garnet Ave., just before the I-5 overpasses.
