The vice chair of the California Democratic Party Labor Caucus and secretary of the California Democratic Party, Daraka Larimore-Hall previously served as the chair of the Democratic Party of Santa Barbara County, and as vice president of the Tri-Counties Central Labor Council.

After graduating from the University of Chicago in 1999, Daraka worked as a political organizer in the U.S. and Europe, including a year as an anti-racism and election organizer in Norway and Sweden. Daraka also spent eight years in Berkeley as an activist and officer in UAW Local 2865, the union for teaching assistants at the University of California, and is currently finishing a PhD in Sociology at UCSB.

A Santa Barbara resident, Daraka lives near some of the best hiking and Wilderness areas in the state, although threatened development along the Gaviota coast, wildfire impacts on watersheds in the frequently-burned Dick Smith Wilderness, last year's oil spill near Refugio State Beach, and fracking and ongoing offshore oil drilling plainly visible in the Santa Barbara Channel
demonstrate the number of ongoing environmental issues in Santa Barbara County which could impact environmental policy statewide.

Two Year Anniversary

Second Anniversary Event Award Recipients

Picture
As we celebrate two years of San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action this Sunday at Ponce's, we'll also recognize the special courage of two of our club members.

Cori Schumacher, candidate for Carlsbad City Council, will receive the club's second annual Making A Difference Award for her efforts highlighting the threat posted to her community by Carlsbad Measure A last fall and winter – and the leadership she demonstrated in helping defeat Measure A at the ballot box. Cori has taken that win and her record of activism advocating for human rights and the environment, and is focusing it on making her community a better place as an elected official.

Picture
Dan Ortiz has served on the California Democratic Party platform committee for 10 years, and will receive the club's first-ever Steadfast and Courage Award. Dan stood up to significant corporate interests and pressure within and outside the party to weaken community choice aggregation (CCA) language in the state party platform. Other platform members might have acquiesced, but Dan stood fast – and CCA language remains in the state party platform because of his efforts.

Join us on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1:00 p.m. at Ponce's Mexican Restaurant in Kensington for Second Anniversary Event, and help us recognize these two outstanding environmental Democrats.

Celebrating a Busy and Productive Year

In addition to our ongoing efforts vetting the best environmental Democrats and positions on issues and ballot measures, San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action have, so far, in 2016:
  • Galvanized activists opposed to a mall being built along Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad
  • Demanded closure of a hole in the state constitution allowing for the circumvention of California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) oversight by developers.
  • Pushed back against the watering down of community choice aggregation (CCA) by brazen corporate interests.
  • Backed a ban on single-use plastic bags in the city of San Diego.
  • Helped usher passage of the city of San Diego's landmark climate action plan through the county Democratic party central committee.
  • Put our foot down against more freeway lanes and greater air pollution in communities already beset by chronic environmental justice issues in opposing the SANDAG ballot measure.
  • Led fun, awareness-building hikes to placid El Monte Valley in Lakeside, currently threatened by a sand mine; and the San Elijo Lagoon, a wonderful island of conservation albeit beset on all sides by encroaching development.
  • Sought answers over the unnecessary and secretive firing of the executive director of the California Coastal Commission.
  • Continued our awareness campaign on the national GOP's attempt to privatize public lands like National Forest and Wilderness areas.
  • Pushed for congressional renewal of the 1964 Land and Water Conservation Fund.
  • Urged candidates and lawmakers to embrace greener political stances.
