Thanks to everyone who joined San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action on Saturday, Oct. 22, for our No on Measure B event at the Mission Valley Branch Library on Fenton Parkway, near the Fenton Parkway Trolley Station.

Environmental attorney Julie Hamilton, Save Our San Diego Countryside: No on B co-chair Mark Jackson, George Courser with Sierra Club San Diego and San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action president Tommy Hough offered remarks and presentations as to why Measure B must be defeated.

A ballot measure that will enable the construction of the proposed 600-acre Lilac Hills development, Measure B is slated for an area north of Deer Springs just east of I-15, and just south of West Lilac Road in Valley Center.

It is nowhere near transit centers, and essentially calls for 1,700 homes and commercial development to be dropped into a rural landscape without regard for water, fire safety or road improvements.

Unlike the Carlsbad Measure A decision earlier this year, this is a countywide ballot measure – meaning every voter in the county is eligible to vote on it. That's good news, but we need San Diego County to follow the example of San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action, the San Diego County Democratic Party, the Sierra Club and other conservation groups around the county and VOTE NO ON B.

No matter where in the county you or your respective networks may live, whether you're in Imperial Beach, Oceanside, Lemon Grove, the city of San Diego or Borrego Springs – you can VOTE NO ON B and make a difference.
This forum is one step in getting the word out to friends, family and neighbors.

One Loophole Can Be Cured by One Sentence in Sacramento

Measure B is enabled by the same loophole in the state constitution responsible for the developer-funded Carlsbad Measure A earlier this year, in which a mall was proposed for construction above Agua Hedionda Lagoon along Cannon Road. So until change happens in Sacramento and we close the loophole once and for all, every community in California is vulnerable to similar proposals.

As was the case in Carlsbad, by putting the proposal on the ballot, Accretive Investments is hoping to circumvent CEQA – the California Environmental Quality Act – which every builder and developer in the state is obliged to adhere to. We're going to harness the power of county voters and stop them – but we need your help. Start by attending our forum today, Saturday, Oct. 22, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Mission Valley Branch Library.
