San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action ballot measures and endorsed candidates who won their races are listed here. For more on all the election results in San Diego County, go to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters website. See our original page of endosements here.
We had a number of key wins among our endorsed candidates, especially women, and our club played a significant role in defeating Measures A. B and C.
In particular, winning a NO vote on Measure B was a David and Goliath fight at the county level, with all the money on the opposing side – and it lost by 64 percent. Exceptionally qualified, Mara Elliott won big to become the city of San Diego's first female city attorney, and Georgette Gómez has won a seat on the San Diego City Council in District 9 (D-9).
Unfortunately, we came up short in several races – including George Gastil for mayor of Lemon Grove; Melinda Vásquez in her race against Brian Maienschein for California State Assembly in AD-77; and Bill Fowler in his pursuit of a seat on Carlsbad City Council.
Sadly, both Dave Roberts and Doug Applegate have now also conceded in their respective races. A genuine environmentalist, Dave Roberts lost his bid for re-election by a hair to Kristen Gaspar, and his absence on the county board of supervisors will be immediately felt. After waging a tough campaign and extraordinary effort against Darrell Issa, Doug Applegate also held on until the final votes – losing by less than 3,000 ballots. In doing so he gave Darrell Issa the fight of his political life, and won big in the San Diego County portion of the 49th district.
In National City, Luis "Louie" Natividad and José Rodriguez, both of whom were rated "acceptable" in city council races, also failed to win enough votes. Hopefully we will hear more from all of these candidates and lawmakers in the very near future.
Measure D – also known as the Citizens' Plan for San Diego, also failed to win enough votes, though we believe sizable components of this plan can still be applied to manage the expansion of the San Diego Convention Center and the transformation of the Qualcomm Stadium site should the Chargers opt to leave the market.
