We'll hold annual officer elections, elect candidates to two new executive board positions, vote on additions to club bylaws and discuss a pair of issues before the club, and then we'll welcome environmental attorney Cory Briggs to talk about the Citizens' Plan for San Diego.
Among other things, the plan calls for the continued use of Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley for a stadium, provided the city and the Chargers somehow – even at this late date – agree to build a new stadium there.
However, in the event the Chargers were to leave Mission Valley, the initiative calls for the city to sell the Qualcomm site to San Diego State University, U.C. San Diego, the San Diego Community College District and the San Diego River Park to provide additional park and habitat space along the San Diego River with a low-density campus extension for an area college.
We're looking forward to the presentation, and we hope you can make it this Wednesday evening the 24th at 6:30 pm as the club welcomes Cory Briggs.

Carlsbad Measure A Update (vote NO on Feb. 23)
February has already seen its fair share of environmental ups and downs in California, but on the front burner is Carlsbad Measure A , which will be decided by a special election in Carlsbad TODAY – Tuesday, Feb. 23.

California Coastal Commission Fallout
While there was good news last week as President Obama designated three new National Monuments in the Mojave Desert as part of Senator Dianne Feinstein's long-simmering California Desert Protection Act, we remain in a state of shock after the California Coastal Commission – for no publicly stated reason and in a secret vote – fired the sitting executive director of the agency over the objection of hundreds of supporters, marking a first in the commission's 44-year history.
Even NBC 7 described the firing of Dr. Charles Lester as "a victory for developers and business groups," marking an ominous turn in the future management of our state's hallowed coastline.

The club voted unanimously on a resolution in support of Dr. Lester at our January meeting, and we've since extended a friendly invitation to one of the individuals who voted against Dr. Lester at the Morro Bay meeting to come before the club and speak. For the record, all four of Gov. Brown's appointees to the coastal commission voted to sack Dr. Lester.
Please remind your state elected officials to ensure the California Coastal Commission adheres to the spirit and intent of the California Coastal Act as it moves forward. While you're at it, dust off your old Save Trestles gear and prepare to fight battles once won all over again, as we face a very different coastal commission than the one that voted against the toll road through San Onofre State Beach in 2008.
