Three Endorsements in Three Races
San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action awarded three endorsements at the club's January endorsement meeting at UFCW Local 135 on Saturday, Jan. 9, including an endorsement for incumbent state Senator Marty Block in the 39th State Senate District, in which he is being challenged by Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins.
Many thanks to the candidates for a substantive, good-natured and detail-heavy forum in which they answered questions and discussed their environmental strengths and respective track records. Votes were cast by paper ballot, and ultimately a significant majority of SDCDEA membership opted to back Senator Block's campaign for re-election.
Saturday's meeting also resulted in overwhelming endorsement votes for incumbent Congressman Scott Peters, running for his third term representing California's 52nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives (CA-52) – and San Diego City Councilman Todd Gloria, running to succeed outgoing Assembly Speaker Atkins in Assembly District 78 (AD-78).
Members of the public were permitted to attend the meeting, but only SDCDEA members were allowed to vote or formally address the candidates in questions from the floor.
"I was very pleased with the process, and appreciate the time and energy the candidates spent on answering our club's questionnaire and addressing questions from members," said president Tommy Hough.
"The level of commitment among all the candidates in addressing our environmental challenges on climate change, water, the drought, or parks and open space is a reminder Democrats remain the only major party that has a serious, reality-based agenda to protect our planet," said Hough.
