Stop the Lilac Hills End-Run Around the County General Plan
Environmental groups have been pooling resources to oppose the Lilac Hills Ranch development near Valley Center - a proposal which violates the county's general plan on smart growth by, in part, leap-frogging beyond current boundaries with a limited road structure, significant wildfire risk and a sizable traffic increase in an otherwise rural area of the county.
In a move of supreme cynicism, plan proponents have been using greenwashing tactics to build support for the project by touting the project's presumed LEED certification and citing lack of affordable housing in the county. But the developer is also seeking to circumvent the standard public approval process involved in placing a ballot measure by utilizing the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to call an early – and sudden – vote on the matter this Tuesday, July 19. The meeting was only announced this past Friday at 12:00 noon.
This action will bypass state and local environmental laws and approve the project without road improvements, without funding for schools, or without a realistic wildfire-response plan. County taxpayers will also be on the hook to pay $500,000 to put this deliberately-rushed measure on the November ballot.
