2017 San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action Honorees
For the first time, the club's 2017 Making A Difference Award goes to an entity instead of an individual – the coalition of North County activists who successfully fought under the umbrella of No On Measure B, and preserved open space in Valley Center from the poster child of bad development seeking to circumvent CEQA: the 600-acre Lilac Hills development, which may yet make a comeback. Mark Jackson, co-chair of the No On B campaign, will accept the award on behalf of the coalition.
Our 2017 Steadfast And Courage Award goes to Debbie Knight, executive director of Friends Of Rose Canyon, for her perseverance in the fight to remove the Regents Road bridge proposal from the University City community plan, thereby preserving a vast stretch of Rose Canyon as open space for human enjoyment – and important habitat for our non-human neighbors.
Our new Member of the Year Award goes Renée Owens, for her ongoing leadership and activism in local environmental matters. From ecological expertise to bird calls, Renée has generously shared her passion and enjoyment for the outdoors with the club by leading hikes, donating photographs and bringing our attention to a variety of issues in East County and throughout the region.
